TOMOSUKE NAKAYAMA (b. 1959, Tochigi, Japan)

Tomosuke Nakayama is a Japanese painter known for his exploration of decorative aesthetics through mixed media, combining traditional materials with contemporary techniques.

After completing his graduate studies at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1985, he has developed a distinctive practice that integrates metal leaf, oil painting, and experimental surface treatments.

He has held numerous solo exhibitions in Japan and Europe, including in France and Italy, and has presented his work internationally through exhibitions and demonstrations.

His works are held in public and institutional collections, and his publications are included in major libraries such as the British Library. In 2024, he completed a ceiling painting commission for Togoshi Hachiman Shrine in Tokyo.

Nakayama is a member of the Kokugakai and the Japan Artists Association, and has held over 180 solo exhibitions throughout his career.

私は具象、抽象にとらわれず、描きたいものをさまざまな材料、技法で描いています。油彩、アクリル、水彩、ヴィトラーユ（フランス製の絵具）を使っていろいろなタイプの作品を制作しています。
心がけていますことは、安定志向のある芸術ではなくて、次はどんな作品を生み出してくれるのだろうかという、作家自身に期待を持って頂けるような、いつも新鮮で実験的な作品制作を変わらなく続けて行くつもりでいます。

I create without being bound by the distinction between figurative and abstract art, using various materials and techniques to express whatever inspires me. My work spans a diverse range of styles, utilizing oil, acrylic, watercolor, and Vitrail (French specialty paint).

I strive to avoid the comfort of "stable" or predictable art. Instead, I am committed to a continuous, experimental creative process that remains ever-fresh—keeping my audience excited and wondering what I will create next.
